Cruelty Of The Fur Industry

The Fox In The Trap

He looks around in desperation as he tries to pull his leg from the trap. He struggles to get free but the steel vise cuts into his flesh. The poor little fox feels excruciating pain and wonders what this device could be that holds him so fast. He howls in pain but no one is there to free him from such misery. Now, he can only wait to die on this brutally cold night.

Holding on with the last remnants of his strength, the fox manages to survive the night but the next morning he sees a man coming toward him but not with a look of compassion in his eyes but instead a look of such coldness and disdain that the little fox trembles in fear as he knows there will be no mercy shown to him.

The Little Fox poem

Oh little fox,
where do you hide
from those who say?
“You are only wild,
an animal all the while…

You have dared to take
an inhuman form to offend
their ignoble eye…
for from the truth they abstain
in such readiness to disdain
and justify the suffering they rend…
wearing a cloak of humanity,
they can only pretend.

But little fox
your heart is pure-
more than those, I fear
who have such artifice;
and one must ask if they be sincere
for whom they choose to bestow a tear.

Just a fox
they say…
as they set cruel device
for your lovely fur
only for vanity sake
your life they spur.
No they are not your superiors,
nor even your equals,
with your heart so pure.

Oh little fox,
for those who worship Him…
can they not see his Hand in you
as he wrought them;
and in your broken body
with your cold, lifeless stare
do they not see that
those who have defiled
against Him… Beware.

What Price Vanity?

“As the animal struggles in excruciating pain to get free, the steel vise cuts into his or her flesh—often down to the bone—mutilating the leg or paw. Some animals, especially mothers desperate to return to their young, will even attempt to chew or twist off their trapped limbs. ”From the Peta Website

How tragic it would be for these kits if their mother didn’t return just so someone could wear her fur.

“Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives.” – Albert Schweitzer, Theologian, Musician, and Medical Missionary

You can see from this video, the horrible conditions that animals on fur farms are forced to live in every day. Appalling conditions like this are not unusual in the fur industry. Each year, more than 100 million animals are raised and killed for their fur. On fur farms, wild animals spend their entire lives in cramped cages, deprived of the ability to engage in natural behaviors and instead are forced to pace back in forth in their small cages. Many of the animals die from starvation and exposure to harsh weather conditions and some die from severe mouth injuries they get from trying to chew through the rusty metal bars of their cages. This is the brutal reality for these animals until they are violently killed and skinned for their fur.

The Painful Truth Behind Fur

Countries Who Have Banned Fur Farms

In a historic decision Israel became the first country to prohibit the sale of fur. The ban was in effect at the end of 2021. Italy has now banned fur farming. The Italian Senate voted to ban all fur farms and shut down mink farms, recently. This is in part due to Covid-19 outbreaks in mink farms throughout Europe, citing them as a public health risk. The country’s plan to shut down all fur farms is projected to be in force by June 2022.

Other countries to ban fur farming are: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Ireland, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and the United Kingdom. Many cities across the US as well as in other countries have also enacted fur bans. Due to stricter regulations and fur becoming less profitable in other countries, many fur farms in these countries are no longer economically viable and, as a result, are no longer in operation.

I would like to see the U.S. and all other countries where fur farms still remain join the countries who have banned an industry which makes such profits off treating animals so inhumanely. I hope soon there will be a day when no animal is killed for his skin. Isn’t high time that we stop inflicting such suffering on animals just for the sake of our vanity?

Macys, Nordstroms, and Bloomingdales have committed to a fur-free policy and are no longer selling animal fur.

The Neiman Marcus Group announced that by 2023 it will discontinue selling any products made from animal fur in accordance with its new policy, which eliminates fur products from Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman stores and websites. Additionally, the company will also be shutting down its 21 fur salons in stores across both Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman.

Saks Fifth Avenue will also cease selling products both online and in stores that are made from animals raised for the use of their fur or those made with fur from wild animals by January 2023.

Pledge to Reject Fur

I am rejecting fur. Whether it came from an animal on a fur farm or from one who was caught in a steel trap, every fur coat, fur trinket, and piece of fur trim was a result of tremendous suffering and death. I don’t support the fur industry. I pledge to reject fur.

Make fashion kind, end animal cruelty on the runway

Tens of millions of animals suffer and die every year for frivolous fur fashion, their beautiful fur turned into a trim on a coat, a pom on a hat or a keychain. Many designers, brands and retailers have now stopped using fur and more recently fashion weeks in Copenhagen, London and New York have gone fur-free. Yet Paris Fashion Week continues to allow brands to promote fur cruelty at its events.

Speak out today, tell Paris Fashion Week organizer Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode to commit to a fur-free future now!

Insights

“Be a Compassionate Shopper” invites readers to examine the hidden suffering that often lies behind products purchased without a second thought. Through the powerful imagery of a fox trapped and the moving poem The Little Fox, the article reminds us that animals experience fear, pain, and loss just as deeply as humans do. The fur industry, driven largely by vanity and fashion, subjects millions of animals to lives of confinement, cruelty, and violent deaths each year.

Yet the article also offers hope. Many countries have already banned fur farming, and an increasing number of fashion retailers and luxury brands have committed to fur-free policies. These changes demonstrate the power of consumer awareness and ethical decision-making.

By choosing compassion over vanity, shoppers can help reshape the marketplace. Every purchase becomes a quiet but powerful vote for kindness, encouraging industries to move toward humane practices that respect both animals and the natural world.
